MP's also direct traffic and hold check points that have a habit of being blown up. They also run the prison system and that can get you into trouble as the abu ghraib scandal should attest. It is never easy to be a prison guard civilian or otherwise.

In the British Army the Royal Military Police (RMP) or Red Caps perform similar job as the civilian Police in warzones such as Iraq and Afghanistan. Also they support the rear area operations. The job is to law enforcement (including criminal investigation) on military property and concerning military personnel, installation security, close personal protection of senior military officers, management of prisoners of war, management of military prisons, hunting down deserters, traffic control, route signing and resupply route management. From what I have been told by RMPs is that the job is as bad as the Civilian job but only thing is you get a better uniform.

My husband is an MP and was deployed to Afghanistan. He said it was alright but would really rather not do it again. He said it was boring, repetitive and very long hours. It did not help that he worked with a bunch of dumb @**es. MP's are also a bit to political and there are to many butt kissers, But the experience is great and he already has out side jobs waiting for him because of his experiences ... so there are pros and cons to the jobs. You just have to decide if it is worth it or not. Good luck with your decision.

Torture and beat prisoners. The American army must take anyone to be a prison guard judging by the mess they make of things.

They watch out for enemy attacks on the base and/or personnel, they police the troops, and they try to avoid getting killed by car bombs and suicide bombers. It's never easy being a prison guard, in or out of the military.
