"Smile -it can't be that bad." I can not count the times I have had people say that to me......HOW do they know how bad it is??? Do they not stop to think --maybe her house just burned down--or someone close just died...or whatever.. I personally could gouge out the eyeballs of the people that say it to me......anyone else feel the same-if not please tell why it doesn't bother you.

ok--for the record. I didn't say that it WAS that bad--and I am not wollowing in a damn thing. I am just as alot of you suggested not a big fat *** grin walking around. Still think that doesn't entitle people to make a hollow statement as such.

People say that to me all the time. Why can't strangers just mind their own damn business? You're right. They have no idea have bad things are. Or even if things are pretty good doesn't mean you have to smile about everything. The other answers suggested that you may need a stranger to brighten your day. That is crap! If you are not happy with yourself, I don't think a person that you do not even know could totally change you. Good question.

Oooooh, that's irritating. I'm a happy happy person but I get told that all the time. I've come back with some sh!tty remarks, but that's just me. It's a lame half-hearted attempt at cheering someone up (who is probably not sad, just minding their own business and lost in their own thoughts). Besides, wouldn't you wonder about someone who just walks thru the grocery store with a big smile on their face for no reason? If you want to make a stranger smile you can simply smile at them and ask how they are, say have a nice day, etc.

It shows people still care, but I don't really like when people say that either. When I am thinking about something, I look really serious and people are always asking what's wrong, even when they don't really know me. You are right, something serious could have happened and then they are making it a little worse. On the other hand, if you are thinking of some minor mishap, maybe it will make you think that "Yeah, it could be worse." So I guess it just depends on what's going on and how you react.

I think it is really annoying when people say stuff like that, whether they are co-workers or strangers. If I am not walking around smiling, it is inevitable that someone tells me things are not so bad. How the heck how bad do they know things are? When I am thinking about something serious, I am not going to be smiling and cheerful.

Because no matter how bad it seems to you, things do get better.

Personally it doesn't bother me if someone says that to me, though they hardly ever do. I guess most people don't think about the negatives in life, they would rather think positively and see someone smiling rather than not. Smiles are contagious, believe it or not.

Oh, and just for the record. I don't smile a lot, I am actually pretty serious all the time. Maybe people don't say it to me because I scare them away, I have had people state I look mean most of the time.

You know, on one hand I will agree that it's a bit presumptious to assume that whatever you've got going on in your life is "not that bad."

On the other hand, you know what? At least someone out there took three seconds out of their day to acknowledge you as another human and express something resembling concern towards your frown. In this day and age, that's a pretty rare thing.

Get over it. People say inappropriate things all the time. I've heard much worse.

OMG I used to work at a tuck stop years ago and I hated the job so I was never in the best of mood. You have no idea how many truckers would say that to me and I would have to do one of those 'forced' smiles and act as if i knew what he was talking about. Talk about annoying!

If they say that too you...it's probably because you don't smile very much. No one says that to me...but I smile too much. I think they just want to see you smile when they say that...nothing bad meant by it. Also.....they could mean that there are good and bad things that happen in everyones life...but it's how you handle things that makes your life good or bad. You need to plow through the bad times....know that things always get better..not matter what happens to you. Know that bad things will happen...and that you can get through whatever it is...time heals all...and smile....life is to be enjoyed. Make the best of it...because it's going to be what you make it. How you handle the bad stuff is what shows your character. So Smile, Smile, Smile!

You should not respond in such a negative attitude...in all of the people in this world.. that one person took time out of his day to speak to you. Its just a saying for lack of something better to say. If you are miserable inside than you should just reply, I am sorry but today it is simply not possible and leave it at that but do not curse someone for haveing the courage to be nice to you. You will burn all your bridges one day and you will have nothing to cross when you need to get to the other side to someone you love when you yourself are in need
