Yeah, it means the opposite.

It's not a hard and fast rule. Some don't believe in separate explanations, and some do. Some believe that the reversed means the meaning of the card is reversed.

In the end, once you get used to the cards, you'll find that they have a meaning for you that may be different from what any book definition gives. The books are just a starting point. If you want to take some meaning from the reversed orientation of the card, go ahead. If it makes it easier to learn wihtout doing so, then wait, and decide later. It's all about what works for you, as the pictures on the cards are only meant to strike some sort of psychic cord that brings enlightenment.

If you are using Tarot cards as an oracle, you may be more inclined to read reversed card meanings. But if using Tarot Cards as a tool for Psychic Ability you would be less likely to hold to any hard and fast guide lines. I’m a profession psychic and use Tarot Cards in a random way. In 25 years of professional readings I’ve never used reveres cards or used any ‘meanings’ of tarot cards from any books.

So if you want to develop ‘Psychic Ability’ throw the books away and let the images inspire you.

I believe we are all psychic, but for the majority the gift or the belief has been long knocked out of them. Educated out is another way of looking at it. Many professional psychics have grown up in a psychic friendly environment. Perhaps a grand-parent or parent with the knowledge has helped bring the extra sense out in the open and encouraged its use. But there are as many practicing psychics who have not had the benefit of caring psychic guidance and who have still managed to develop and hone this natural extra sense. The Psychic Sense.

But on the other hand, if you want to use the Tarot as an oracle, a form of divination that needs no real ‘psychic ability’, then find some spreads you like and use reversed meanings if you prefer.

The key factor with Tarot is faith. This is why there are so many different types of cards, readings, and variations. It is good to connect and understand the archetypal aspects of the cards, but ultimately it is up to you to allow the cards to speak for you. It is the same as any other religous ceremony (communion, page rituals, magik) in that it is through your willingness to let go and let in (Spirit, Life, God, or whatever you choose to call it) that grants power to the cards (or ceremony). Proficiency occurs after this type of consciousness forms a groove in your nervous system. Once proficiency develops it will not matter what particular technique you use in your readings. Until then, simply do what is most comfortable to YOU and what makes the most sense to YOU.

Traditionally, a reversed card means the influence of that card is present but is blocked, or possibly leaving. Some readers choose not to use them at all.

It's up to the individual. In the system I learned, we did not do reversals. Which was quite a relief, since we do something called linkages (additional means if two or more particular cards are in a reading together), and that was plenty to memorize.

Many decks come with definitions of the reversed cards. Most people read them as if they were facing cards, instead of reversed. You can read them either way. I usually read the reversed meaning as well... I find it usually applies.

I consider a reversed card to be a weaker influence or an inappropriate one.
