The controversial nature of the film's content - exorcism (accompanied by blasphemies, obscenities and graphic physical shocks), was supposedly based upon an authentic, nearly two-month long exorcism performed in 1949 on a 14-year old boy (with pseudonym "Robbie Mannheim") in Mt. Rainier, Maryland by the Catholic Church (in the form of a fifty-two year old Jesuit priest named Fr. William S. Bowdern and Fr. Raymond Bishop). The official exorcism was reported in Thomas B. Allen's and Carl Brandt's 1993 book "Possessed: The True Story of an Exorcism". "Possessed" (2000) was also a pay-TV-cable Showtime movie of the same name, starring Timothy Dalton. The film's plot was also partially inspired by a similar demonic possession case in Earling, Iowa in 1928.
Accounts of both cases are dubious and sensational;istic, so be careful with your research.
BTW: "The Amityville Horror" was a hoax.

I don't believe in ghosts but I do have a wierd story. A few years ago I lived in college res. On the last week of school I was studying for a final until just before 3am. I got ready for bed, lay down, and turned out my light. The second my light went out there was a knock on my door. I turned it on and went to the door. No one was there. Not a big deal because it could have been my neighbours door down the hall. I went back to bed and I turned out my light. The very second it went out my door shook violently for about 20 seconds. I thought it was my neighbor so I ran and opened it (stupid I know). There was no one there and no one in the hall. I shut the door and called home. I was scared. Then my room smelled like nail polish remover so strong that my eyes watered. I almost cried dude. A 19 year old college dude practically in tears. I just about crapped my pants. I ran upstairs and into the main hallway. No one was there either. I went to the main desk and on my way 4 more doors behind me slammed. It was the middle of the night. It didnt stop until I was at the front desk. They escorted me to my friends room and the campus police investigated "mischeif". They told me that they didnt find anyone (obviously) but they couldnt explain the nail polish remover smell. When I did get back to my room, all of my books were open on the floor. My door was locked. I moved out 3 days later but that was the last night I spent there. What the **** was that about??

I saw something regarding this on the History channel.. All is true except that the possessed girl was actually a boy. Strangely the girl who played the lead role in the Director's cut of the Exorcist died shortly after finishing the film.

The movie is not based on a true story. I have heard it is very LOOSELY based on an exorcism which occured somewhere in Europe.
According to wikipedia, it was based on an exorcism done in the United States(see link below). I doubt that and think it is more likely that Blatty based it on research done on European exorcism (including one done by a young John Paull 2-before he was pope).

they changed their names and moved from the Georgetown WashingtonDC NOT Euurope, at least not the movie the exorsit with Linda Blair
it was a true story and the girl now is I think in her late 40s not sure if her mom is still around, or the priest.
didnt want people to bother them or harras them after what they went thru
Priests generally do not talk about ersonal things that people have trusted them with.you know like when you go to confession they dont repeat that either
thnk about if it were you and something this terrifying happened to you , wold you want someone going around balbbing your business?

I have seen a tape and heard real exorcisms--they are very real. They are not that common at all though.
