I got my cat when she was 3 years old from a friend, so I don't really know the cats history. I know she is happy sometimes, but still doesn't pur.

The main purpose of purring in cats is to signal other cats that it is open to social interaction at that moment. I noticed that when mine group groom each other, there's a lot of purring. When a person pets a cat, it interprets the petting as grooming. Some even try to groom you back by licking you.

There are just some cats that are more independent than average and don't seek social interaction. They may not purr as a result.

Also, watch that the cat is feeling alright otherwise. If the cat is in pain, sometimes the amount it purrs will change.

Purring is a basic behaviour. It invites and welcomes attention. It is the sound I love best. I have had a cat who purred so loudly that you could hear her from across a large room. If the sound is quiet, you can still feel the vibration. She will purr, however is unique to her, when she is enjoying your touch. Cats will also purr when in distress.
Yes, 3 weeks is very young, but she has a new mom now. Enjoy her and show her lots of love. Don't worry.

He might be happy but just doesn't purr. My Norman cat purrs but it is so light you cannot hear it. The only way I can tell is to feel under his chin near his throat. Maybe that's how your cat is.

It is a possibility that it does purr but very quietly. As long as it is happy i wouldnt worry.

My kitty has what I call a broker purrer.. you really have to listen almost hold your breath in order to hear her purr. She does purr but its so faint unless you are listening for it you would't hear it. Maybe the same applies to your kitty.

My kitten never purred till he was much older and even now it is very light and only soemtimes.
You may want to have your vet check out its' voice box.
Good luck and keep petting him.

if you took it from the mother too early, it didn't learn how to purr. or it's just never happy lol but that's not likely
