I'd prefer an all inclusive with a children's program, gym/health spa, and proximity to rain forest for day trips.

Punta Leona. Its on the Pacific coast, offers excursions inland, reasonably priced, and my wife and I as well as friends have all stayed their and had a great time. Advice on CR is get the heck out of San Jose post haste so that you can enjoy the country.

Hi,

Your best bet is one of the larger resorts in the Guanacaste Province (Four Seasons, Paradisus Playa Conchal, etc.) or closer to San José the Marriott Los Sueños.

In the Nicoya Peninsula super cool Punta Islita Hotel may offer children's activities, but my sense is that it is a smaller property and the kid may not find enough playmates.

Cheers,

Carlos

Do not go the week of Easter!!! It is holy week there and EVERYONE in on vacation. All of the resorts and hotels are packed. I lived there and recommend not going that week. You can also check out my answer under travel > costa rica

First, go to http://tripadvisor.com for reviews from other travelers.
Then, go to http://Luxe.worldventures.com They search all the other main sites like Orbitz, Expedia, Travelocity, hotel and airline sites and offer you the lowest price. You’ll save even more when you book it as a package like air and hotel together.
