Here's a list from the xbox.com site:

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardcompatibilitygameslist.htm

It says it was updated last in August so there may be a more up to date list somewhere, but this is official.

As far as buying one, I think Costco has the best deal. A premium system ($399) with an extra wireless controller ($50) and the play & charge kit ($20) plus a game ($50) all for $489 or so. They may have some other bundles as well. The Costco ones are the only ones that actually save you some money.

Some games are compatible and some aren't . . . yet. The plan is to eventually make all the Xbox games playable on the 360 system. You need to check the list on the website often because they are adding new titles all the time. By the way -- when you look at the list, it may seem a bit odd because a lot of older games have been made compatible, while newer one aren't yet. What happens (or so I am told) is that the folks work on one game -- and then the fixes they make to that game can be applied to a whole bunch of others. They don't intentionally work on the less popular games, it's just that sometimes the less popular games benefit from the fixes they created while working on a more popular game.

original Xbox games can be playable on xbox 360 as long as microsoft have released a patch for the game in question, If you have xbox live 360 the easiest way to find out if the xbox game can be played is just to stick the game in the 360, if its been patched the 360 will update the game automatically. Best place to buy 360 in UK is usually gamestation as they have some wicked bundles, and also won't be beaten by local retailers.
