The answer is Maybe. And technically, your parents won't be the ones who send you to "jail".

If you runaway, and are located in your area, it is likely that your parents will be called to come to the police station. A probation officer will also be called, and the probation officer will make the decision as to whether or not you should be taken to a youth shelter, taken to juvenile detention, or be released to your parents. If your parents don't want to take you home, the probation officer has two options: Youth shelter or juvenile detention.

If you run away to another county but aren't too far away, the county sheriff will send a deputy to pick you up and bring you back to your area where the probation officer will make the decision about where to place you.

If you run away to another state, you will be placed in detention in the area where you are picked up. Once you are transported to your home area, the probation officer will make the decision about what to do with you.

If you are released to your parents, you might be released on house arrest or on electronic monitoring.

Your parents and you will be responsible for the costs of returning you to your area, and will also have to pay the costs of detention. Around here, juvenile detention costs $100 a day.

You'll get placed on probation for being a runaway, too, which means that you'll be under the control of your parents AND the court for a period ranging from 6-12 months. .

Where I live, it is mandatory a parent send a child to school, keep them in after curfew, be responsible for anything the child does that is illegal, the parent can be charged.
However, they send the message to the child that parents cannot physically restrain you, it is not breaking a law to run away for 36 hours or more and miss school. It is not breaking a law for a child to come home stoned and drunk. The police have not been very helpful with this "game" of law for parent, not for child.
If you are a 16 year old kid running away from home, I say keep going you unappreciative little monster, get a job and remember, life is not near as fun when all the responsibility is on you.

Yes. As a matter of fact, you don't even have to run away! you can stay gone 24 hours and they can pick you up and bring you home, but if your parents want, they can take you to jail. I went to a friends house & stayed the night at 17 years old. I was supposed to come home, but didn't. I was arrested the next day for "disturbing the family peace" and ,also, got put on house arrest. if you no longer wish to live at home, there are other (safer) options. get emancipated. but you will need to come up with the money to do this and you have to prove to the court that you are responsible enough to live on your own.

Only if you have been charged with a crime. Believe me, I have done this for 10 years and you can't put a runaway in jail or juvie just because they ran away. The police find the teen and usually take them to the station and have the parents come there to pick them up and have a talk. If it is a repeat runaway, then social services/child protective services becomes involved.

Yes, they can. It doesn't happen all that often but it is an option.
(not adult jail mind you, but a juvenile detention center or the sorts)

There are alot of things that are illegal if you're still considered a minor.

It's on law books, and actually illegal not to obey your parents. Alot of archaic laws out there still on books that can come back to bite.

If you have committed a crime, anyone can have you arrested by the police. Since you are still a minor, your parents can have the cops pick you up and bring you HOME. if they have sufficient evidence that you have committed crimes, you could serve time in a juvenile facility, or if you have signs of mental instability, they could have you committed to a mental hospital.
