I plan on going to the tanning salon 3 times to get a nice base tan, but I'm worried about the things I hear involving skin cancer and other dangers. Considering it's winter here now I can't go outside or the beach to tan, and it would be nice to be tanned during the winter. So I'm curious if it's really that harmful to go a handful of times?

How much does your chance for something like skin cancer increase the more you tan? Surely 4 or 5 times won't greatly increase the risk, right? I would really like a tan for winter, but I don't want to get skin cancers over it. Thanks for scaring the shite outta me haha.

I don't believe that if you go a couple of times it would be bad, however, to some, the tan is a bit addictive and can lead to harmful results. If you plan on doing it only a couple of times, try using a lotion that gives your skin a little protection while also allowing you to get that base tan you are looking for. However, if you plan on keeping a tan throughout the whole winter, you will need to do it more than a handful of times. Maybe getting a professional spray tan from tanning salons would be your best bet.

Skin cancer can come from one, yes, I said 1 exposure. I highly recommend that you steer clear of any tanning beds as well as the real thing when it does get warmer out this spring and summer. Always always always do a fake tan. New formulas these days look so natural. I recommend Neutrogena's Micro Mist Tanning Spray. You can spray it at any angle and you don't have to rub it in, the mist is so fine. Use it once a day for about 3 days and you'll have a totally natural-looking tan. And you'll have only spent $8 as opposed to $30 or more at the tanning salon and you didn't have to leave your house to do it.
Or, visit a tannis salon but sign up for one of their airbrush tans. I still think Neutrogena's works great though.

I was just reading something yesterday and it said that 80% or either 90% of your skin's damage comes from tanning. I have also read that the tanning bed is worse than the sun. If you want a tan, then I would suggest just a sunless tanning lotion. Just don't buy the cheap kind, because it will make your skin orange!

yep it is. first of all, tanning can prematurely age your skin. Ever hear the phrase "rays today raisins tomorrow"? well it's true. My mother used to hide under an umbrella and wear tons of sunblock and big hats. all of her friends thought she was crazy, but she looks 40 at 60 and all of her friends are all wrinkled. You also run the risk of getting age marks, the most disgusting marks you'll ever see in your entire life! Skin cancer is a big risk, not worth it, I say. If you want to have a tan in the winter, go to a spa and ask for a sunless tanning. they'll do it pretty cheaply and professionally for you. that and you can keep your creamy pale skin well into your 50's

I used to say that I would only go tanning on special occasions like for prom or to get a base tan for the winter or whatever the case may be... As long as you don't do what I did ... (basically get addicted to tanning) and you don't go in for too long ... (don't get burnt) then you will be fine... Just try not to go too often because you will get addicted to it... Especially in the winter because its warm and tanning releases endorphins... sooo thats why it becomes addicting.. Just be careful and you should be fine...

I wouldn't think so, and I'm considering doing the same too.
I have a very good base tan and as long as your only trying to maintain your tan and not get burned in the process, you should be ok I'm thinking. I'm going in 2 weeks if the sun doesn't come back out.
