Just put a new stereo in my car cause the last one had terrible reception. For some reason when I turn on my head lights, there is power, but no sound. Tried running it from the battery but that didn't help. Any suggestions???

Get someone who knows what they are doing to install it for you. You obviously have something not wired right, and it's going to ground through the headlights when they are off, but becoming positive 12 volts when they are on. And do it quickly before something shorts out and causes a car fire.

First thing to do is attach a good ground (negative) to the frame of the stereo then the other end to a good clean (remove paint to bare metal) frame of the car, (also disconnect the exsisting ground wire because I think you have it connected to the lighting circuit, usally the blue wire from your stereo is connected to the lighing circuit so when you turn on the vechicle lights the display on the stereo coinsides with the dimmer of the dash lights) newer vechicles have alot of plastic so make sure the metal is connected the the "Frame" of the vechicle. You can try a temporary wire to the negative of the battery also to confirm. This may also been a problem with the bad reception of your old unit, the antenna needs a good connection the the negative as well as the stereo chassis.
Good Luck!

Make sure that the head unit's wires are connected right and make sure that the speaker are connected also.

sounds like your illumination wire is hooked up to the wrong wire.
