If you are talking about "grommets" - plastic tubes through the ear drums - this usually involves a general anaethetic

Once the patient is anaesthetised, the ENT doctor makes a hole in the ear drum and then pushes the grommet through and then goes and does the other ear.

tubes really help. they put you to sleep and put em in. they are actully in your ear drums i think. my bro had em done. he couldnt hear so he was speech delayed which made him behind even now hes a senior in high and is having problems from being behind. his hearing is totally perfect thought. it helped. my dad had it too.
