check the NYC site of citysearch:

http://newyork.citysearch.com/roundup/40050

it has lists of things to do and information on local events

NYC can be expensive if you do the "touristy" things but there are plenty of things to do that are just as fun but free or inexpensive. For instance, instead of paying to take a tour of the Statue of Liberty, you can ride the ferry to Staten Island and see if from the ferry. A hotdog or a pretzel from a vendor wont break the bank. Walking along Fifth or Madison Avenue, Visiting FAO Schwarz and Macys are also free as is Grand Central Station and the NYC Public Library.

The ferry to the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island is $11.50, but if you're in class until 5 PM, you won't be able to get there. The park closes at 6 PM, and the last ferry to Liberty Island departs at 3 PM.

The cost to visit the Empire State Building's 86th floor observatory is $16. If you want to go to the top, the 102nd floor, it's an additional $14. It's open until midnight, with the last elevator going up at 11:15 pm.
