The hippie generation possibly had more effect on the government because they were really the first political protesters who showed some disrespect for the government. They rather caught them off guard, the government was at first at a loss to know how to deal with these long haired anti-establishment youngsters. When the police riot teams were sent in to deal with them, the people as a whole were shocked, and sympathy flowed to the protesters. It was all a new experience in England. Another point worth remembering is that during the past twenty or so years, many of our prominent politicans have been ex-hippies.

Our glorious fascist leaders have realised that they don't need to listen to us - cause they've all joined the same political party. Besides, who needs to listen to ANY group that doesn't represent more than 50% of the population, even if it DOES represent 49% of the population, so long as you're allowed to stay in your fatcat job screwing the country up and over then it doesn't matter a damn what people think. Even worse is that once politicians have won an election they never EVER keep their promises - cause they're in the job for 5 years and there's not a thing you can do.
The war in Iraq was protested by more than 10 thousand people in London. That's 10 thousand protestors - many more people would feel very strongly, but for one reason or another couldn't make the protest - or didn't quite feel strongly enough. When the government can ignore that amount of people they don't need to listen to anyone, other than their spin doctors and the 'donors' who keep their pockets lined.

General apathy is mostly the problem. As long as men have beer and sports (the Joe Sixpack mentality) and women are dealing with their families (the Sally soccermom) most people don't extend outside of their little worlds or care to. The relatively few make the decisions for the majority for just this reason and every once in awhile when someone in power really screws up or are exposed other powerful people are their undoing and the general man on the street just applauds for a sec or two and goes about their business without much care...

If your country offers you a Vote then you should encourage everyone to exercise that right. Try to remember that when there is a vote EVERYONE VOTES including the people who stay away from the poles. The people who do not actually vote are saying "I am agreeing with the Majority,..regardless of who that majority is." That becomes a Vote.
Whenever a Vote is allowed, there is no such thing as an abstention. A committee if eight means EIGHT VOTES, including the person who does not vote but instead "has agreed to support the majority."
Once you have thus educated your people, you can use that force to change your government.

You are too distracted with cell phones, video games ipods, etc. and also too self absorbed and spoiled by the baby boomer parents who made you think the word revolves around you -- you never had an edge in the first place.
The US is currently being run by a few fat old men and their little boy -- partly because you jerks didn't get off your butts and vote.

Human consciousness itself is never fixed but continually changing and developing new categories and concepts. These determine how we experience the world, so that knowledge is always the result of a series of conflicting positions - hope this helps.
