I don't mind people wearing their shoes in my house unless there is visible debris on their shoes. Some people's feet may be more of a problem then if they have their shoes on. Some people may not want to take their shoes off. I don't usually take off my shoes if I am going in and out of my own house. Once I am in for the evening even most of the time during the week I have my shoes on inside the house.
In fact I don't like to see shoes piled up at the door of my house. Those shoes get in the way.
However, if shoes can be well organized at the door, I don't mind taking mine off if asked when entering someone else's house.
If shoes are visibly clean I think it is a silly and totally unnecessary practice to remove shoes at the door to the house. Very little disease is transmitted from visibily clean shoes, contrary to what a lot of people think.
If you have white carpet throughout your house (totally impractical) then I can understand making a policy of no shoes.
What really surprises me is when people have large pets who are allowed full rein throughout the house and people are expected not to wear shoes. There is something backwards with that picture.
I would never allow my large dog to roam throughout the house on a daily basis, because dogs are just not clean enough due to their personnal hygiene practices. People's shoes are routinely cleaner than dogs. Some people allow their dogs all over their beds and furniture. That is gross.

I think it is rude to ask house guests to take off their shoes -- unless the guest has excessively dirty shoes or the homeowner has just had the carpet cleaned/gotten new carpet. In my area it's a fairly uncommon request -- from my experience I'd guess maybe 5-10% of people have a no shoes policy.

No, I always take my shoes off when I visit other people because I have the same rule at my house and would like them to remove their shoes in my home.

Absolutely not! I much prefer that they tell me so that my presence will not cause them any inconveniences. If that is what they wish, it's THEIR home! I recall how my ex-wife would pick up the broom and start mopping immediately after people left, especially during the winter months... it bothered me that she suffered to see dust or dirty floors and was always cleaning... so I used to help her clean and mop and never made fun of her (well, not in front of her but everyone always laughed at how she made Felix Unger, of the Odd Couple, look like a messy slob).

No, I don't. For it's their house and their rules. We may be use to leaving on our shoe's in the comfort in our own home. But in someone else's house we need to respect their rules. Otherwise if your shoe's are dirty and gross which who know's where you shoe's have been for the day its better to take them off and obey the rules.

UP here in the north west, it is the norm. You ALWAYS take off your shoes unless they ask you to leave them on for some reason. OUr weather is just too crazy and shoes are always dirty.

Actually in most of asia people do that..and i think it's good.it not only keeps the house clean specailly if it's snowing outside and you have snow and water all over your shoes...and .it's comfortable too for some cultures..cause they sit on the floor to eat....
the only time i don't like taking my shoes off is if i am wearing high heels and pants and it drags if i take my shoes off...and i look short..but you have to honor and respect the host don't you think?

No, I follow their rules. You track all kinds of stuff in on your shoes. It helps your carpet to last longer and have less stains on it. What if they have small children who play on the floor.
Anyway, it's their rule and if you can't stand by it maybe you shouldn't visit, or have them visit you instead.

It's just more polite to take off your shoes. It’s also an easy way to keep your home clean. The sole on most footwear is a dark color, a kind of “don’t ask, don’t tell” of blended-in filth.

No, I was raised to do it automatically. Most German homes have a chair in the entry-way, with a shoe rack available.
