I have a young German Sheperd who I got out of the pound. He is a sick dog - stopped eating, seems to have painful gas, very dehydrated and has had a bad cases of diareah in the past. Spent a small fortune at the vet and they can't tell me what is wrong other than his intestines/bowel is dialated and it could be gas. They kept him overnight worried that his bowel had twisted - that was not the case. He was very dyhydrated when i took him to the vet friday.
This weekend at home, he was in a lot of pain becasue of gas ( i think) I gave him gas-x and that seemed to work temporarily. does anyone know of some long term solutions, diet? things to help with digestion or strange bacteria in digestive tract?
He has had stomach, diareah..problems a lot since i have had him. He seems very uncomfortable and unhappy.

Trying to diagnose a dog that I have not seen is not easy. Consider this ask your vet for a parvo test. Secondly the best way to feed a dehydrated dog with intestional problems is boil chicken or hamburger, drain the fat and mix with rice. Pour some chicken broth over it for flavor and it should encourage the dog to eat. Give you pup ice cube to lick, as he might find it interesting and it will hydrate him. You can also pick up some pedilyte at your grocery store in the baby section. Make sure it is flavorless. I can see you are looking for some home remedies, but maybe you should try a different vet. If your dog is dianosed with parvo, you are looking at a small fortune to try to help save him. I would also request that a stool sample (fecal float and smear) be evaluated for bacteria and parasites.

I'm going to second the suggestion to find another vet. If you live near a university with a vet school, try there - they tend to be up on the latest techniques, unlike some of the older vets. (Not saying that all older vets are out of touch here, just some of them)

Do everything you can to help prevent him from getting gas in the meantime - one thing that people don't think of is to elevate the food and water bowls so that the dog won't gulp as much air along with his food and water. Also, look into his diet - are you feeding him the cheap dog food, or something like Iams or Hill's which doesn't have so much filler in it. You might even consider shifting him over to meat (boneless and not overcooked) and limited amounts of veggies, that's less likely to cause gas and diarrhea.

In humans, ginger and mint teas help with digestion, and they're both cheap and easy to make. Ask your vet before giving him those, however, sometimes dogs react differently than humans.

First you may want to get a second opinion from another vet. Get your records from your current vet so the new one will know how your vet was treating your dog and all meds prescribed and such. Also ask about the prescription food ID which stands for Intestinal Diet. It is specially made for dogs with intestinal problems problems and most dogs tend to do very well on it. Good Luck! And be sure to ask about the food. It's an excellent product.

ASAP, get a second opinion. In the mean time to get some food in him,try frying hamburger mixed with cooked white rice. A vet told me this before when a dog of mine had diareah. You also could try some pepto-bismol. Good luck and I hope your dog is feeling a lot better real soon.

The vet really should have kept him overnight and given IV fluids. Find a vet that will do this immediately.

sounds like you need another doctor - cannot imagine allowing the dog to continue in pain and dehydrating ......
these sympthoms alone can do great harm to the dog if not kill

if this is something that cannot be helped with medicine or surgery....the most sympathic treatment for the dog is needed

thanks for caring!

Get as many professional opinions as you can - take him to all the vets you can think of but DONT let them operate on him until your satisfied with the diagnoses. And whatever you do dont leave this any longer.
