Seems to me he was frightened by one and it stuck with him.
now he wont go to bed, constantly looks out the window for one.
He is even concerned about me beating up the truck so that i wont get hurt.

Well first go to the store and get him a garbage truck to play with. Show him how (with sand) how the garbage truck works. Show him how the truck makes lots of noise and why (with the cans and such). Let him watch the truck every time it comes and show him how it stays in the street and cant come and get him. Explain as best you can that the truck takes the garbage away so it doesnt smell everything up. Good luck with this one I hope this helps.

You could start with explaining to him where the trash goes in the house, out to the big trash can and then to the trash truck. Let him know that they are doing a really good job and if the trash were to stay in the yard it would stink!!

I work and deal with a few trash companies at my work so I've made friends with them (over the phone). You could call your local trash people and see if one of the admin people had time for you and your son to stop by to check it out.

It's not silly that he's afraid of it. If he see's how it works he might really like it especially if they pick it up with the claw. That was cool (the no longer do that in my area). My 3yr old likes to watch them when we go walking and I gagg from the smell while she watches (strange little girl). She likes how the machine smashes the trash too ( I wouldn't tell him that part).

Everyone has a fear of something and if you introduce it to him and talk praises about the trash man he will be just fine. How bout a toy trash truck or a book about trash from your local library. They always have a subject my Daughter adn I can talk about.

A great idea is for him to face the fear. Maybe you can call the local company and have them stop at your house for an extra minute so that your son can see what the garbage truck is all about. I did this with my daughter when she was terrified of clowns. Asked one to take of their makeup then slowly put it on so she could see that it was just a person. We also took her to the local store during Halloween sales and let her try on all of the masks. It really helped. She still has a ways to go but she's not as scared anymore.

I Hope this helped.

Do it the same way that airlines teach how to get rid of Fear of Flying.
* Make it a familiar experience. Get toy trucks. Get books about trucks. Get CDs of Bob the Builder
* Talk to him about it. Tell him you are not afraid. Get the other adults in his life to confirm that they're not afraid.
* Take gradual steps to desensitize him. Stand 50 feet away from a truck. Then 40, then 30. Show him how it's noisy when it backs up so that humans can move safely.
* Hynosis works for adults for unreasonable fears. Check with a licensed hypnotist that works with children.

lol. Get him books with garbage trucks, let him watch videos or shows on tv with trucks of all kinds and the drivers who operate them. Explain to him how its a car. Let him sit in your car and see that its a machine that makes noise, and then take him to some place that has trucks like garbage trucks and let him sit in and see the operaters.

Thats the only thing i can think of.

There is a great book called, "Trash Trucks, Trash Trucks, Trash Trucks" that is by (I think) Daniel Kirk. I wonder if reading that would help any?

Maybe walk him out to the curb to talk to the trash guys one day?

Look for a "Touch a Truck" type event in your neighborhood where they let kids climb around on different kind of trucks and cop cars and stuff.

HMMMM thats a tought one.Kids sometimes have fears we just don't understand.Maybe a book about garbage trucks or a toy one will help calm his fears. My oldest son was afraid of aliens! Not to laugh to much or make fun of 12 step programs, but thats exactly what I did for him.I found cartoonish aliens in books,t-shirts and such and let him check them out on his own time.It worked for us.Wishing you luck :)

Read him some garbage truck friendly books. When it's garbage day have him wave to the garbage truck. He'll eventually grow out of the "frightened of the garbage truck" stage. It only took me until age 20. :) They're loud and they eat things.
