This needs to be discussed with your doctor. Different birth control methods can cause different side effects, including weight gain. Different contraceptives are prescribed depending on your health history, meds that you take, family health history, etc. This is definitely something to discuss with your doctor. Everyone reacts to meds differently. For instance, many people want the shot because you take it less frequently, most people have shorter periods, and sometimes missed periods all together. I, on the other hand, had a nonstop period until I took enough hormones to counteract the shot (3 months). Nothing I used agreed with my body, except condoms. To ensure no weight gain from birth control, suggest that your boyfriend try the new male birth control pills.

Birth control affects different people different ways (blah, blah, blah) but typically, the shot does make you gain weight (and has some other nasty side effects). I would recommend the pill if you are good at remembering things (you have to take one everyday at the same time, or ELSE), and nuvaring if you are not. Nuvaring is what I use, and I think it's amazing. Its a clear little plastic ring that you put at the base of your vagina and wear for three weeks, then you take it out for one week (you can also take it out for 2hours for sex, though I leave it in half the time). You can't feel it at all and its pretty much foolproof. The patch is another alternative, but it has a higher accidental birth rate, and some of them are getting recalled because of health problems. By the way, if your boyfriend is telling you to get on birth control because he hates condoms, think carefully. Unlike condoms, birth control is internal, and changes your homones (sometimes drastically). Also, i would suggest (from personal experience) that you continue to use condoms or the pull out method to avoid pregnancy. Because birth control is only 99% accurate, and in relationships, people have sex more then 99 times. #100 is statistically a baby.

Any kind of pill is the best birth control. It has been out for a long time and works. Of course there is no way to be completely protected from STDs or pregnancy other then abstinence.
I'll warn you now--DO NOT GET THE SHOT. People have various experience on it but I feel strongly about it due to my own. I got one shot (lasts for three months) and did not read the fine print. It states that you can become infertile from it--I wish I would have known. After my one shot my husband and I thought we'd try to have a child. My period never came back. I couldn't conceive for a year and a half and never got my period back until I became pregnant. I still have yet to have regular periods nearly four years later. I know when people get on birth control the focus is not getting pregnant. That was my focus at least but you need to also think about trying to get pregnant later on down the road. I was told (by my doctor) it could take me up to five years to conceive, if I could at all. It was devastating! People on birth control (especially one where you don't get periods) love them until they try to conceive. Then they're in for a hard time. I don't know about the patch, or IUDs from personal experience but I do know they release high amounts of hormones which make it unlikely to get pregnant even without using it anymore.
Consider your choices. Read fine print. Weigh the pros and cons. Realize that you might want to get pregnant later on and see if the risk of not being able to is that important. If you do all of this I guarantee you'll find a great form of BC. Best of Luck!
NOTE: My case happens more often then not--although there are people who do not have a problem getting pregnant after being on it. I just wouldn't ever want to risk it again and advise others not to take that risk.

The shot is awesome if you don't want to have to think about your birthcontrol - but I've been hearing more and more about OB/GYNs only giving it to people for a couple of years. It made me gain weight, but I have known a lot of people who didn't. Also- it's really convenient to get rid of your period. I'm on the pill right now, but I always panic when I miss a pill - so then I'm paranoid for the whole month until my period comes. The new Nuva Ring sounds pretty cool - I'm up for anything that doesn't require daily attention. (Most people don't know that you should take the pill at the SAME TIME everyday to get the most effective results.)

Weight gain is one of the side effects for the shot but that is the case with many birth control you need to speak with your doctor because you will need a complete physical before they put you on anything and he will explain all of the side effects and how common they are in each case.

A lot of people say that you gain weight on the shot but it all depends on your body not everyone gains it. One thing to consider is what you would like to use not your boyfriend. also tell him he can can use male birth control like condoms too

I tried the shot for a while and I didn't like it because it seemed like I spotted all the time. On the pill I have very regular periods, they are light and I don't have problems with cramps.
But don't just go on birth control because he wants it. The shot or the pill won't protect against STDs. It's your body. Take care of it.

i loved the shot! i didn't gain all the weight people swore i was going to gain..in fact as soon as i got off of it i blew up. it's all about your hormone level and what your body can handle. i have a friend that did go on the shot, got a little bloated, but worked out to maintain her weight. if you gain weight with one BC, most likely you will gain weight with another. but the amount of weight is really nothing. better than gaining 40-50lbs during pregnancy.

I love being on Depo. No weight gain, but the first shot will make you a bit loopy for the first day, if you're like me. So like, don't drive or try to be productive. I love it because I hate taking pills and forget to take them for days. I've heard from other women that it causes depression, but I didn't get that either. All the next shots won't make you loopy like the initial one.
I've been on Depo since 1994 and totally love it. No worries and no periods!

My friend is on teh shot and she loves it. She has not gained any additional weight once being on it.
I got pregnant on the pill so that is out for me. I've tried Ortho Evera(the patch) and i do not like that.
I am currently using Nuva Ring. Its once a month and i LOVE it! Easy to use, you dont feel it and you only have to change it once a month. Talk to your gyno about whats right for you and your lifestyle.
Kudos to you for seeking protection!
