The jet stream direction should be faster, right? When I fly from L.A. to Boston it's always faster from West to East. This Hawaii flight goes against this theory. Thanks for any comments you have!

I am not sure that your first statement is correct. I just flew that relation and the Hawaii to LA segment took one hour less then the one from LA to Hawaii (opposite from your statement, i think) ... like you said jet stream direction helps out ...

I have done this flight before except my trip was to Oahu instead of the Big Island. The best thing to do is to sleep since you will be gaining time. Hawaii is 5 or 6 hours behind NY time so if you can get some sleep, you will adjust better to the time change. I suggest you bring in addition to the iPod Touch and Nook, a portable hand-held gaming device such as a Nintendo DS or a portable DVD player where you can watch a movie. Books and/or magazines are also a good idea. Also bring some food with you because those flights are long and it is easy to get hungry. See if there is some activity that you and the family can do on the flight such as play cards or ask trivia questions. Unfortunately the LAX to Hawaii flight can be really long because if you look out the window, all you see is water.
