The education system in England and particularly in Wales is in decline. I do not know about Scotland. In England there are a few good schools left mostly grammar schools from 30 years ago. In Wales they have been abolished. There are fee-paying schools too but ordinary people cannot afford them at £2,000 a term, 3 terms each year.

O levels are now called GCSE and are approximately 60% of the quality of the old O level from 30 years ago, or roughly equivalent to an old CSE from that period. It is normal to take 8 GCSEs but many students fail to get 5. Pass mark is C.

You are expected to take Maths, English Language and at least one of Biology, Chemistry, Physics. Usually a European language; very few schools would offer Chinese. Possibly from abroad you could take 'English as a Foreign Language' but you would need to check this.

A levels have been wrecked by the new system brought in 5 years ago. Previously taken over 2 years with 3 exams at the end for each subject, now divided up so that the first exam is taken after only 3 months of the A level course. 4 subjects are required for medical courses at university, otherwise 3 subjects.

There is a move towards International Baccalaureate which - if more schools follow - is the only way a portion of our education system will be saved. However I foresee that more education will be taken online* maybe in the next decade if not immediately. The school environment no longer offers a guarantee of personal safety...
