I have breastfed two babies for 4 1/2 months each and in each instance have lost weight, then started to gain because my metabolism just caused me to be extra hungry.

I was in the same boat!! Although breastfeeding burns up to 500 extra calories a day, the increase in appitite can easily make you consume more than those 500! I was an eating machine while nursing. I was ALWAYS hungry. I didn't realize how out of control my appitite was until I stopped nursing and it went back to normal.

Like all things related to pregnancy, this too shall pass. Good luck to you!

Ultimately, its your metabolism and eating habbits that cause you to gain/lose weight. Breastfeeding requires a litte more caloric intake from the mother, but not that much more. Say if breastfeeding requires you extra 200 calories a day, but you only intake 150 calories more per day, so you'd begin to lose weight. But after breastfeeding, you are used to those extra 150 calories/per day, and you begin to gain weight.

When you're breastfeeding you need to eat extra calories. The weight gain is probably due to the fact that your child is nursing less (starting solids or using formula when you're not around). You may just need to decrease your calorie intake!

When did you start solids with the babies? Any possible relationship between starting solids and you beginning to gain weight because maybe they were nursing less?
