A woman was standing on the corner holding one of those signs saying "out of work- hungry- please help". We had pizza at work that day and I didn't eat the can of soup that I had brought with me so I had it in my lunch bag. Since I had no money and this woman looked for real like she hadn't eaten in a few days, I reached the can of soup out the window to her. She looked at it like it was a piece of trash but took it and said thanks and smiled. Did I do something wrong here?

It was a can of Chunky soup with a pull-tab top.

You did the right thing, even if it wasn't appreciated.

I've been there, though, too. There was a guy outside a store I was going into, also holding a sign asking for money for food, and I didn't have any cash.

So when I was in the store, I stopped by the deli section and had them make up a turkey & cheese sandwich. I grabbed packets of condiments that he could add if he wanted to, added it to my groceries and used my ATM card to pay for it all.

On the way out, I handed him the sandwich. He opened it up, asked "What's this?" and I told him it was a sandwich, that I didn't have cash, but I wanted to get him something to eat.

He threw the sandwich down on the ground and stepped on it, murmering that he wasn't asking for food, he wanted MONEY for food. (???)

Needless to say, that's the last time I've given any homeless people food (or money for food) in person. I always go through the soup kitchen or other charitable organization these days...

Once again I see people with nothing but ignorance on this question also. Beyond popular belief not all homeless people use the money you give them for drugs or booze. Did half of you ever stop to think maybe they do use it for what is intended for. This is a question thats hits home. I was homeless for a few years, did not panhandle but did get financial help non the less. I used this money to get myself a nice place to sleep on the weekends and take a hot shower. I finally had, had enough of this situation and got so far down I slept in a homeless shelter for one night. I then decided to get my stuff together and I joined one of the armed forces. I got my life together and now have three children and a wife and a great life. Yes you did the right thing and I commend you for doing so. I think the look for you though was (not to sure) maybe she wondering how to open the -can- without a can opener?

Know in your heart you did the right thing. It's much better than giving them money. It might have taken a moment to realize the act of kindness. I'm sure people say and do some rude things to people in that situation. One time at a stop light I saw these guys gave a homeless man a McDonalds bag and drive off. He looked inside, fished around, shook his head and crumpled up the bag. It was either empty or had trash in it. They went out of their way to be cruel to him.

No you did not do the wrong thing. I congradulate you for being a good person that cared for a fellow huma being, and gave all you had.
If this person did not appreciate the Pizza and soup then she was out there to pan handle for money to support a drug ar booze habit.
Do not feel bad, you did the right thing, fell good about it.

You did fine - the beggar did wrong.

I once had someone come to my door asking for any loose change I might be able to spare. As it turned out I had a big piece of wood in the front yard that I had to move over to the side. I told him that if he would do it I would pay him 5 bucks. He agreed and went to do it. A minute later I came out and he was gone. The whole job would have taken him 30 seconds.

properly my solid element is sometimes my worst high quality, and my undesirable element is sometimes my solid high quality... solid - like you i'm overly difficulty-free, yet many situations to a fault. For some reason I not in any respect imagine of "cushioning" a number of my truths. for sure this one is solid too because i'm an fairly honest man or woman it is something that any one enjoys having round. undesirable - Very aggressive, when I get into something, i'm getting into it enormous TIME, at the same time as i do not hotel to dishonest or something, i'd be very hyperactive and obnoxious now and again throughout it. On a favorable for this one notwithstanding, i'm not in any respect prepared to provide up no count number how bleek the problem might want to seem because of this solid aggressive spirit.

No but 99% of the time these ppl are not homeless and just want money for drugs and alcohol. That's why I say instead of giving cash, go by them some McDonald or something, you never know where the money will go.

You did what I would have done, giving her food. I have given money before only to see them go into a store and buy wine. I have peace of mind knowing someone has the opportunity to eat if they need too. You are a good person. God Bless You.

...all points are valid in regards to "giving money...they'll buy alcohol or drugs" etc. Did you do the right thing? Yes you did because it was out of your heart and soul.

not all of them buy drugs & alcohol, not all are "bums". Will this change the kind of person you are deep inside? Do what you can for your fellow person. Some do more, some do less, just do something. Karma

You did the right thing, but i get the sense that people who are asking for help prefer cash as a form of help instead of a meal. But as the old saying goes, beggars aren't choosers, the woman should have been grateful for the offer.
