We have a ritual at bedtime for both of my boys. At around 6:45 they get in the bathtub and play in there until the water turns cool...I think that is one of their favorite times of the day. Then around 7:30 they get to watch a short movie and are normally ready for bed at about 8. We have our prayers and huggie time and then they are off to sleep.

Young children require huge amounts of sleep. This is when their bodies grow, along with their little minds. Most families have a set time to arise in the morning and the bedtime of the child should reflect that. Children of that age usually require10 hours of sleep a night.
Adjust your child's bedtime to your schedule.

The preferred bed time for a 5 year old is either 8 or 9pm.
Anything earlier than that or later than that isn 't good for them.
If you put them to bed to early, they will be up too early in the morning and be really tired in the afternoon. If you put them to bed to late, they won't want to get up in the morning. I would try for 8pm and see how that goes.

Depending on how active he or she is i would say 7-8 is ideal.
If any later make sure to have a quiet time so that they can just wind down and rest. a bath or bed time story is great for that. this way there's no fighting to go to bed. spending time with mom or dad before bed makes for sweet dreams and good night sleeps.

I don't think this is a question that has a right or wrong answer. It depends on your lifestyle. Do you work? Does your child attend school? If the child attends school you need to insure that they get a good nights rest. 8 hours is ideal for that age.
