You can take it in Calais (France) or in Oostende (Belgium) but it takes much longer via Oostende ... Of course, if you have to take a train from Brugge to Calais and the boat from Calais to Dover, it might be easier to start with the ferry from Oostende unless you're seasick !

There are only freight ferries from Belgian harbors to England.
The best way to get from Brugge to Dover is either by Eurostar (train) or by car+Eurotunnel.
When traveling by Eurostar, the best way is to take the train from Brugge to Brussel and there take the Eurostar to Ashford. It will take you approx. 2,5 h. Already in Brugge you can buy a ticket for Ashford.
Don't go from Brugge to Lille (Fr) and the Eurostar from there, it will take you longer and you'll have to switch a couple of times.
If you go by car, take the E40 from Brugge in the direction of Veurne. When you pass the French frontier, the E40 becomes the A16. You stay on this road and head for the "Tunnel-sous-la-Manche". There you board the shuttle train and cross the Channel.

Brugge is very close to Oostende, where you can catch a ferry to Dover.

I took it years ago; I recall it being a few hours.

Yes there is, but you have to go to Calais. And you can always drive thru the tunnel. The tunnel starts in Nord-Pas-de Calais and end in Folkestone( England). With the tunnel train it takes 2 hrs. and 55 minutes from Paris to London.
