I slow down so they can pass me. I will pull to the side of the road to give them the opportunity to drive by.
It is much easier to have them in front of you where you can watch them, then to have them behind you where you have to worry about them.
That is my philosophy.
PS. I am to slowest driver on the road when I get on the highway because I drive the speed limit or 5 miles per hour slower.

I never drive at the speed limit so this isn't an issue... I am the tailgater.
HOWEVER if someone is driving at the speed limit I will back off as they are doing what is proper and just because I want to go faster doesn't mean that other people should break the rules.
HOWEVER you should not be driving at the speed limit in the left hand lane if there is more than one lane as that causes just as many, if not more, problems than tailgaters.
You should also be courteous enough to pull over if it is a long, one-lane road. There is no harm in letting someone by. In fact, it is safer and more polite to do. Nothing is worse than some jackoff driving 5 mph under the speed limit with a line of 25 cars all tailgating each other because that jerk wants to drive slowly. Simply pull over, let the others move on, and get back on the road.
If you are courteous, others will be too.
PS: My husband tells me all the time that I drive too closely to the car in front of me. Often I don't even realize that it could be considered tailgating and I am not doing it to express displeasure or anything, it is just how I drive. If I'm pissy, you'll know it. So keep that in mind too, not everyone on your tail is aware that it is invading your personal space!

No, you should not speed up since you would be doing something you don't enjoy doing. Please don't let the bad behavior of a tailgater make you change your good behavior of driving within the speed limit.
To be honest, I usually drive 10 MPH over the speed limit and I still get tailgated all the time.
What I would suggest is that you leave ample space between you and the car in front of you in case you need to slam on your brakes. That way, you can ensure being able to stop in time and allow the tailgater time to stop with ramming into you from behind. Just let off the accelerator if you feel you're getting too close to the car in front of you. (Tapping your brakes might aggravate the driver behind you.)
If you are going with the flow of traffic, there's an open lane and the tailgater is not changing into it and you feel your safety is being compromised, you can signal for a good 5 seconds and then slowly and safely change into the next lane over on the right. You can go back to your original lane after the tailgater passes.
If the tailgater is in front of you, again leave plenty of space between you and the tailgater in case the tailgater gets involved in an accident. That way, you will be safe.

The passive-side of me would enable me to press on the accelerator pedal quite afew times on the highway. They do this, tailgate your bumper, to get you to speed up, which is the likeliness of what will happen usually, but is not correct or proper for either party. I stopped being so passive to these types only because they are not in the right to make or hinder friendly drivers as yourself. You keep your distance from the car ahead of you and to your proper speed limits and let these other "roadhogs" find another way around always running late! Don't feel compelled or distressed anymore! Really, that ticket or accident up the road isn't worth the convenience you provide them every time you give in to their selfish ways! Gr8 question!

I normally won't speed up, I feel like if I do then I'm giving them what they want, if they think I'm going to slow then they can just wait or get around me, plus, I don't want to be the one to get a ticket if an officer notices. Also, when they are completely riding my tail, I step on the brakes and practically stop, that makes them so mad, and it doesn't work if you tap on the breaks, you gotta step on them and make the vehicle behind you react just as quickly to not hit you. It's hilarious, I've gotten flipped off so many times for that, but hey, I wasn't the one riding on someone's back end. Just like those idiots who are behind you when you're waiting to make a right turn at a red light, they honk if they think you can go, so when they do that to me, I sit there and wait for the green light even if I was able to turn. People are so impatient, especially in southern California where I drive around.

Nope. I usually slow down so they'll go around me.
I actually had one instance of a guy tail gating me on a wide street. He could have gone around at any time. But he continued to tail gate. I slowed down and slowed down until I actually stopped. He sat behind me on this empty street - HONKING.
crazy.
He stayed there honking for some time. I eventually got out of the car and left it there. I went in the first door I found just to make a point. He finally drove off.

Sometimes i do.. I tend to drive a little faster than the speed limit. Stay out of the faster lanes, you should never feel scared or unsafe when driving. You should stay alert let the idiot tailgating move around you since they are in such a hurry. If they honk or make you nervous, turn up the radio and keep your eyes on the road.. Drive safely and don't forget to buckle up!

Its best to go with the flow. Yes I have speeded up to get away from a tailgaters...
rules of the road state that you should let off the gas and tap your break a couple times but to slow gently until the offending party passes and gives the middle finger approval.....

The marketing campaign team pronounced has, for my area, an extremely centred and biased view in this and the MP very trusting. i could prefer finding on the stats. Why are you trying to please them, they are breaking the law and in turn making you break it. I usually slow down to below the speed limit. To about 30km/hr if I'm in a 50km/hr speed zone. Sometimes I will even touch the breaks so the break kights turn on but I'm not really slowing down. If somsthing happens and you hit the breaks he could hit you hard enough to throw you inot an intersection. If oyu are speeding you could hit something or someone and be in very big trouble. Touch the breaks and if they don't getit, slow down. They will eventually slow down or pass.
