Please help. My roomate's remote control apparently burst into flames last night and I need to know why. Here's the story:

About 2am, my roomate and his girlfriend woke to find their room covered in smoke and there was a fire next to the bed. They woke up immediatly and put the fire out. It turns out the fire came from the remote control to their tv. There is no question whether it started from the remote or not, you can definatly tell it came from the middle of the remote control. There were no heaters directly on it but there was a heater in the room. There were no lit candles nearby but there were some old ones that had not been lit that day. It's a preety empty room so I cant think of any more surrounding items that may have caused it. Can someone please tell me why the remote control tried to burn my house down and how to make sure it doesnt happen again!!!! Thank you so much for your help.

I suggest contacting the manufacture or research the Internet if there is any recall on that particular brand. Exploding or any remote control that burst into flame is rather rare. However I wouldn't take away that possibility.

It's not that dramatic but happened to a friend of mine while we were in college. The fell asleep and the remote was on top of his electric blanket. The remote didn't burst into flame but it was smoking. The heat from the blanket practically melt the sensitive circuits in the rc. I supposed it could had burst into flame if we didn't smell the burning smoke and quickly threw it out our dorm window. That was a funny college story actually and we had to change the channel manually for the next 2.5 years. It was definitely the dark ages for us.

So possibility, it could happen. Therefore be safe.

TV remote control doesn't normally do this because they normally use just 1 or 2 AAA or AA batteries however, if someone accidentally left an object (like a book) on top of your remote and one of the buttons gets depressed continously..this will cause the batteries to overheat and possibly start a fire specially if the remote is on the bed or on top of something flammable.

The buttons on the remote might be defective as well. Some of the cheaper or aftermarket remote are not built so well. The buttons on these remotes tend to stick when depressed and it stays depressed, this could be another cause of fire or overheating.

Hope this help.

It is simple, no way that remote control will do that, it is something else.
just get new remote control for your TV, or get Universal Remote, in replace to the other one you lost.

It may have faulty batteries that were leaking. I guess it doesn't matter now unless you think it is plotting with the television set. Keep your eye on the boob tube.
