It's one of many methods of having a lucid dream. It's one of most used methods I've seen people use to induce a lucid dream. The M.I.L.D method is where you repeat over and over a phrase such as 'this is a dream', 'I am dreaming,' etc as you're going to sleep in the hopes that it will carry on into your subconscious so that you may realize that you are dreaming.

There's plenty of information about lucid dream and methods to have them at:

The word Mnemonic is the description of the English language memory aid which is often verbal and may use a short poem or special word combination to help people remember something. Wikipedia. Lucid dreams are basically dreams where you know you are dreaming and thus can control the dream and what you will do and see. So, by my logic it would be something to do with hearing a phrase or snippet of conversation within a non-lucid dream that you can identify as being out of context in the dream and by recognising it you cotton on that you are dreaming, thus inducing a lucid dream. Hey presto!
