I'm just answering your question. Yes, I agree don't spend any more than you can afford its only for 1 day. But, you asked on Average how much a wedding is. The average wedding in the U,S is around $20,000. Keep this in mind however an average isn't really all that accurate. For example if 2 people got married and one person paid $100,000 and the next person paid $1,000, the average would be $50500. This is no where NEAR the accurate amount people spend on a wedding.
My own wedding was a little over $7500~ no where near the average.

It depends on the area you live in.
Weddings in smaller communities range from 7500-15000 dollars.
Larger areas range from 10000-20000.
Big cities are UNHEARD of as far as maximums.
Just use your best judgement. Spend what you can AFFORD.
Also, while that list is somewhat accurate....some of those things you don't pay for (groomsmen attire, mother of the bride attire, bridesmaid attire), some you get for free (Grooms tux is sometimes free with other rentals), you can get a the dress cheaper at a small store or a big sale, you can get a caterer through the venue for cheaper....it all depends on WHAT you want, how much you WANT to spend, and what area you live in.
Also, don't spend more than one month's total salary on an engagement ring, don't spend thousands on a designer dress when they won't know WHO made it when you walk down the aisle, and be smart when choosing what time of year you want your wedding. Flowers cost double or triple the amount they would normally around holidays.
Here is the percentage Breakdown recommended (% of total budget):
Ceremony (site, officiant, license, musicians, etc.) 3%
Reception (site, food, drinks, cake, rentals, favors, etc.) 48%
Attire (Bride and Groom ONLY with accessories) 10%
Rings 3%
Flowers (ALL flowers involved) 8%
Music (DJ, etc.) 8%
Photography (including actual pictures, videographer, etc) 12%
Transportation 2%
Stationary 3%
Gifts 2%
If you use LESS than allotted for one specific part of the wedding, then you can add it onto something you know will cost more!!!

(CNNMoney.com) - The average amount spent on weddings has increased to $27,852, up nearly 100 percent since 1990, and the number of weddings per year has increased by 200,000 during that time, according to a new study.
Since 2002 nearly every wedding expense has increased by over 20 percent. This includes the bride's and groom's attire (up 30 percent), engagement rings (up 25 percent) and a 60 percent increase in the cost of the wedding band, according to the Condé Nast Bridal Group.

There is no such thing as average when you talk of a wedding. You can spend little for a great day, it just depends on what you want and how creative you are. If you do not have $20K to spend there are ways to keep costs down and still have your dreams.

Varies widely because some people go all out while others marry at the court house.
People should not spend money on a wedding they cannot afford. It is crazy to start out your relationship in debt. A wedding is just one day.
If your budget it tight then go for a small wedding and spend more on the honeymoon.

It really depend on where you are located. If you are in NYC it will cost more than somewhere in the mid-west. Averagely if you are having the wedding in NYC, it will probably cost $160-$200 per person (including food, drink, locatian, decoration, etc.)
If you are having the wedding in the mid-west, it probably cost under $100 per person.

even the region you are in can effect the amount spent
for example on Cape Cod you can get a reception place for $30 a plate all the way up to $300 a plate
ours was $55 a plate, so in the grand scheme of things we did alright

my budget's way tighter than $20,000. I have some friends who spent $10-13 thous and they were beautiful. I'm trying to keep mine under $6,000 but it's a challenge. I have friends who are videographers, caterors, wedding cake ppl, and printers who are all givinging me discounts so if you have some ppl like that who could help you out you would take a big chunk out of the budget.
