Been quoted online from about £160 each to silly amounts. Is it cheaper to insure as a couple? Prob won't want extreme sports just regular stuff though where does diving fit in? Also most places offer 18mth max and you have to in UK to take out a new policy - does that mean you then have to insure with a local comapny wherever you are in 18 months time?

Speak to Worldwide Insure http://www.worldwideinsure.com/ although they also have an 18 month time limit. I took my backpacking travel insurance out with them and were pretty good.

Get an EU health travel card--even if you're travelling out of EU--from your GP or health benefits office. Check what coverage you already have. I was able to add a travel rider to my existing (Norwegian) national health for about $100 USD per year.

Also, if you are students travelling with an ISIC (card), you might already have some basic coverage. Last time I checked, it was reimburseable up to $5000 USD equivalent.

Finally, if you book travel with a credit card, you might have some accidental travel coverage as well.

Bottom line: thoroughly investigate your existing free or no-cost coverages, then add only what you think you might need.

Best of luck.
