Buy flea powder and flea shampoo and give the dog a bath. I would have your sisters bedding stripped and washed in hot water also buy some flea spary and spray the floor boards in the room. I would keep the dog out of the bed for a week to see if there is a difference. If your sister has fleas, she should have flea bites on her head where she itches.

I just got over a flea problem, and its something that will take time to fix.
First, yes, they can jump onto humans and bite. They often stay in the hair on the head, and sometimes will bite on the backs of people.
Second, the process to get rid of fleas has a lot of steps. One flea can drop 400+ eggs a day. The eggs fall off and live in the carpet, dog bedding, sheets, clothes, anywhere they can dig down. It takes about 3-4 weeks for the eggs to hatch into larva and then into fleas.
Wash EVERYTHING. Anywhere the dog has been (dogs bed, your sheets, etc). Wash it in as hot of water as possible. Give your dog a flea bath right away. Wash all of the dogs toys.
Go out and buy either Advantage or Frontline. Its a topical medicine you put on the dogs back. This will kill 99-100% of the fleas on the dog in 12 hours (and kill any more that jump on later).
Next, you have to get flea powder for the carpet and cover the house everywhere the dog has been. Make sure to move furniture (especially the couch) and put the powder under them. Flea larva naturally dig down (into carpet) and find dark places (under the bed and couch). Follow the directions on the flea powder exactly. You will kill flea adults and any larva that are exposed.
However, flea larva will actually develope into a cacoon. When they are in this state, they cannot be killed. Even vacuming them up will not kill them. They will hatch and crawl out. This is why you must use the flea powder again on the carpet in about 2-3 weeks.
After this, vacuum every day, especially where the dog is. After you vacuum, get rid of the bag by taking it outside the house. If you have a canister vacuum, dump it into a seperate bag and take it outside.
If you are really infested, you might consider flea bombing your house. If you do this, follow directions exactly.
You must also continue to apply the monthly control on your dog every month. Flea collars, once the dog is infected, will not help.
While fleas won't live on you, they can jump on you, feed, and jump off. They generally prefer the taste of dogs over humans. But if they are hungry enough, they will feed off humans and even mate on them. When they lay their eggs (on dogs or humans) they fall off. This is why you must wash everything that you can. You need to destroy the eggs quickly. I would also recommend that you vacuum your beds when you have the sheets off.
Since they prefer dogs to humans, using either frontline or advantage will dramatically reduce their numbers, and keep them off of you.
Getting rid of fleas can be a very long task, but anything less will result in them comming back.
Below are some sites about how fleas work and how to control and prevent them. Hope this all helps!

Advantage flea and tick tablets or spray will cure the fleas instantly. We use it on all of our animals. You can buy it on-line or at your Vets office. Good luck. People shouldn't get fleas. But an itchy head might be head lice. If it is you can see the little white nits attached on the shaft of the hair. They like to get behind ears and at the base of your neck for some reason. You can buy shampoo to take care of that at the drug store but you do have to use the fine comb that comes with the shampoo to get the nits out and any eggs they have laid. By the way, if you use the Advantage Flea and tick removal spray, you don't have to use a bug bomb in the house. The fleas get off the carpet onto the dog and die instantly. Hence they all disappear. Good luck to you.

im not shure if they can live "on" people. They bite people i know that. Treat your dog with somehting form the vet. the over the counter flea meds are useless, and can actually kill your dog. If the fleas are really bad, use dawn dishliquid to bathe your dog in just dont get it in the eyes or mouth. Vacuum your carpets often. if you have a vacuum clean that takes bags put a flea collar in the bag. to kill any eggs or fleas you have swept up. spray the corners and outsides of the room because thats where fleas tend to congagate more.

NO, fleas can't live on people, we are only used as transportation for them. They can live in our homes without having animals. I have fleas and don't have animals. I bomb my home every month. We have a lot of stray cats in our complex and the kids are always bringing the little critters in (the fleas, not the cats).....it sucks. As for your dog, get them on a monthly flea treatment like Avdantage, etc. Your animal should not suffer because you can't afford to give him the best. You wouldn't do that to a child would you? Good Luck!

I don't think fleas will necessarily live on a person but they will live in your carpet, bed linens, etc. The best thing to do is go to a vet and buy some fleas medicine that you put on a dog's back. Then what you do is wash your bed linens and vacuum your rug to suck up any fleas or eggs that they have laid.

As someone stupidly suggested, dont put any Gillette products near your dog - come on be serious here! Your dog doesnt need to be shaved, just treated. Products from the pet shop are rubbish, you need to go get a proper flea treatment from your vet. Frontline and Spot On are the most common. Please make sure you use them within the use by date, as using out of date products can actually make your dog seriously ill/kill it. Also make sure you hoover all the places your dog lies, machine wash its bedding and do regular flea checks in the areas behind the ears, stomach, insides of legs and around the base of the tail. They also can give your dog worms so I would suggest to make sure your dog is wormed aswell.

Take your dog to the vet and get it put on prescription flea medicine. My dogs use a flea and heart worm prevention medicine combined together, it is called sentinel. What it does is, when a flea gets on the animal and bites it, the flea will die. The sentinel also is a heart worm preventive. So I strongly suggest getting your dog to the vet as soon as possible. This will cure your problem.
