The FDIC and the Federal Government state that ANY amount written for a purchase and becomes bounced is a felony. You also see those "Will Prosecute Shoplifters and Forged Checks" signs in the stores

I work at a credit union in Missouri. Any check written For $500 and over is considered a felony.

Maybe states are different, but in Missouri that is the amount.
