I have asked three professors to write letters of recommendations for a federal academic program that I am applying for. All said they would be happy to do it, and I am confident that what they have to say will be benifical, but I am not sure that they have sent it yet. The deadline is this Friday, Oct 20. Would it be inappropriate to ask them if they have completed it yet and remind them of the deadline?

Not at all. Definitely send a polite reminder, and be sure to thank them again for taking the time to recommend you.

Sometimes professor's get busy. Reminding them shows you care about this and are willing to follow up on things. Following up is a very good thing. If someone who interviewed you said "we'll call you within a week" and doesn't call within a week, they expect you to call them. It is a way of testing to see if you are actually serious about the job. Follow up with the professors. Just don't hound them everyday.

This close to the deadline I think it crucial to remond them! Professors get so busy and they very well may have forgotten. If you wait til Thursday, you may end up with a rushed recommendation. Good Luck

Of course, it's appropriate!!
It just shows you care! (think of it as a follow-up)

If that's the type person you are, GO ASK!
you know what I mean? All they can say is "yes", or "no, but thank you for reminding me". Right?

Of course not. Ask them about it, but don't nag. Just explain that you're on a deadline.

it is ok to remind them about the deadline. just don't be too pushy. i don't mind if my students send me reminders about their letters. anyway, i usually send out the letter as soon as they request it. ღ

No, this is twenty minutes of their time and your future depends on it! Do it politely but make sure that they have taken care of it!

It's okay, but don't follow too closely or you might be accused of stalking.

No. But do it after having waited enough.
