Any tips on how to personalize prospective "areas" for each child? The room is a redone attic-with pitched ceilings and a great big window and walk in closet w/ window. Beds are on seperate walls and sides of room.

wow-people are out of control-anyway....who said they aren't on the same floor as parent? They are and they have a fire escape and attend fire safety classes at fire house which just happens to be ACROSS THE STREET. They actually get along well and play together in room often-I was only looking for ways to personalize space...

The best tip I can provide you is let them put what they want up! I'm sure they both have "distinct" personalities, and that should be allowed to show through! My son is 7 years old, and the ONE thing he DEFINITELY WANTS is a chalkboard wall. I thought this was a way cool idea, and it would allow him to express himself freely.
BTW, don't let anyone FREAK OUT on you when it comes to the ages of your kids. I am the oldest of four, and 8 years older than the second born, and twelve years older than the last born. We are well loved, and we care for each other just as much as siblings who were born closer together!

If the room is large enough, place the beds head ends together but with tall, back-to-back bookcases between them as a room divider and as a working headboard for each boy.Bolt the bookcases together for added stability. By placing this arrangement in the center of the room you can avoid the pitch of the ceiling and create a "doorway" on each side of the beds. If the older boy has the bed facing the window (which I am assuming is on the end wall) he will feel as if he has more privacy which he will be wanting soon. Then decorate each bookcase with themes appropriate to each boys personality. A reading light can be clamped to a shelf on each side and the bookcase will eliminate the need for nightstands.

I feel sorry for the nine year old. Their ages are too far apart. A 4-year old is still a baby and should be on the floor with the parents
Make sure you have a fire-escape.....and practice fire-drills often.

you could paint one side a different color, like mayb a darker color for the older one?
and you could put a divider, if you HAVE to... my sister and i shared a room, and we put our bereus in a line to divide the room.

'theme' bedspreads or comforters... at those ages they will be interested in different characters...
pin pictures and personal accomplishment mementos on their walls...
