I'd like to be able to accept donations for a school organization and give the donor a receipt that allows them to declare their contribution on their taxes.

If you cannot get 501c3 status, you may be able to collaborate with another organization that has it. I let my donors know upfront that I cannot give them a receipt, but In send a thank you card and progress reports to them. I am also working on a web site where I will make my financial transactions transparent, so donors can see where their money went. inn the mean time, I am still searching for an organization that will collaborate with me, since we do not have the start-up money for non-profit status.

There is a web site where schools can register their projects for donations of money, supplies, etc. Do a search on Yahoo Groups and see what yuo can come up with. I just tried and could not remember the link, for the life of me.
