Water reflects and scatters the light that strikes it; this is shown by the fact that you can see your reflection in puddles. When the sky is brilliant blue, the sea is also, because it reflects the blue of the sky.
The sea refracts light just as the sky does.
Blue light is more easily bent, or refracted, than red light; thus, light refracted back from the surface of the sea appears blue. Furthermore, when you are underwater the water around you appears blue because more blue light is scattered back to your eye than red light.

Or maybe, like you suggested, fish have blue piss!

The sea reflects the color of the sky.When the sky is blue the sea becomes blue.

The sea is clear, the sky is blue... therefore the seas appear blue

I was on a ferry once in Toronto on the way over to Centre Island, and a wee boy asked why the lake was green, and why the ocean was blue. She told him she didn't know why the ocean was blue, but the lake water was green because that was the colour of their dishwater detergent.........

I would go with the reflection theory but how come then it seems darker or more blue in different areas?I quess it depends on the area oh well thanx for the points.

the nitrogen is blue, and makes up bout 70% of air, sea is blue cause its a reflection of the sky

So many serious answers. I thought that it was from the whales. The are blue aren't they? I just thought they were fading from being in the water.

It is a reflection of the sky.
The deeper you get the darker it gets.
Nothing to do with fish piss - that is orange.
