I also have a 21 month old. He has had shrimp and on the last check up the Dr. said not to give him nuts or shell fish. I said that he already had it and my Doc's response was, "I wouldn't risk it." My little guy loved the shrimp, but I love him more and I decided I did not want to take the risk with him and it is not such a big deal to wait another year. He loves all kinds of foods and there are a million other things out there he can eat without a risk.
Just sharing my experience and thoughts!!

An allergic reaction occurs when the immune system perceives a harmless substance as a threat that overreacts, triggering unpleasant, occasionally dangerous, side effects. Because young babies' immune systems are not fully developed, they are more likely to become sensitized to common allergens.

The foods most likely to trigger an allegic reactio in babies include
Cow's Milk and dairy products
Eggs
Wheat based products
Fish & Shellfish
soy

And when you do feed them these, the symptoms of a food allergy are
swelling of the lips or tongue with a runny nose
persistent diarrhea
vomitting
wheezing or difficult breathing
abdominal pain
in extreme cases - a sudden life threateningreaction with wheezing, hives, swelling of the throat, and shock.

I witnessed a young cousin of mine have an allergic reaction to shrimp (shellfish) he was 3-4 years old, we all had shrimp while waiting for dinner, he LOVED it, and as we sat to eat dinner, 15 mins later @ most his eyes swelled shut! We rushed him the sunnybrook hosptial where they treated him and thankfully he survived! But from personal experiance, my son (17 months right now) is not going anywhere near shrimp until he is older.

Also, My son just over 1, went into a feveral seizure, (seizure do to high fever) and when the medics showed up the first questions they asked were if he had any shellfish or nuts! and let me tell you that right there seeing my son turning blue and begging him to breathe, while he vomits and does the funky chicken on the floor, if that can be caused by those foods, Im avoiding them until he is bigger.

Okay some may think I am overreacting, thats fine,
but my personal life experiance says avoid shellfish until 3
(no one else in the family has an allergy to shellfish just him... not even his twin brother)

My three kids ages, 5, 3, 1 all eat shrimp. If you were to ask a doctor i bet you they would say NO!! But then again they tell you not to give the baby any food and i did the day they came home. I feel giving kidsdiferent kinds of food make them a less picky eater. My kids eat everything and you know what my kids never have junk...I never buy it.

Actually no it is not a good idea do to allergies and such and I know the old say well how do you know if they are allergic to it unless you try. Seriously do you want to take that chance. An allergy to seafood can be almost deadly you need to be very careful,I know that I waited till my boys were about 4 and then it was just in small amounts and I started with simple stuff like tuna or halibut.

You need to be very careful with seafood.

I gave my 12 month old shrimp. Not alot at the first feeding, but just a few bites. Once she was clear on that, now I know I can give her more.

My pediatrician advised waiting until my son was 18 months old to give him shellfish, so according to that time table you're in the clear.

He loves it, and it's a good way to get him lean protein, especially since he doesn't like any kind of meat very much.

You can, and you should. There is a chance of an allergic reaction, allergies are hereditary, so that should give you a clue of what your chances are. The earlier you give kids shellfish, milk, nuts, expose them to the other kids germs, it is less likely that they will have allergies as adults.
