Once you are united to Christ by a true living faith His sacrifice for sin is accounted to you and your sin to Him. Also His sinless life is accounted to you to meet the requirement of Gods law. When that happens God has no charge against you anymore and He would be unjust to punish you because your sins are paid for.
Christ is our substitute.
