There are pigeons living by my neighbor's tree. Every morning, they, as a group, would fly in a circle a couple of times. Then, they would collectively sit back down in spot in the tree. A few minutes later, they would do the same thing. Why do they do that?

Why do pigeons do laps?

It is still a mystery why pigeons circle before they take off. But it is believed that they are getting there bearings on where they are and which way they need to be heading. It is also believed that they us the magnetic fields of the earth to help them find there way home. Some owners give their pigeons some magnetic iron supplements, as they believe that this will help them get back.

For the same reason people go for a jog around the block. Seriously, ever think of how ridiculous we must look to them? They’re probably asking each other the same question about us.

Birds are generally very active in the morning, in fact song birds are usually rather loud. They do that to communicate to one another; something of a “Thank god I’m alive! How is everyone?” each morning. Pigeons don’t have the vocal ability of song birds so the best way for them to get the flock’s attention is to actively move around.

Maybe they are playing a game.......maybe they go out to look around the area to see if there is any food, or maybe they are flying around to catch some bugs flying around the tree. Or stretching their wings before they leave for a hunt for food far away.......Or maybe they don't want to get lost so they stay close to the tree.
