Are you sure it's spelled correctly? I've never heard it before and can't find it on the web.

More than likely, it is the french spelling of an Indian word. The french trappers wrote down the Indian words as they sounded. If the same word had been written down by an english trapper, it might be spelled "apanoe" or a spanish trapper would have written "appano". I would check on Indian dialects from the French Canadian area for a word that closely resembles this one.
