Gee... Muay Thai clinch is a extremely technical fight. It's whole other level. It may seem like a very simple thing, but it's actually very complex. He could have slide a arm down and undereath Silva's legs and sweep him, he could have use his elbow to point downward at Silva's thigh,he could have try use his elbows on Silva's head, and many more.
What Franklin did wrong was try to stand up with Silva. Silva is a very experienced Muay Thai fighter who really know what he is doing, not some guy who take couple months of muay Thai on and off. If Franklin want to stand up with Silva he should have started Muay Thai two or three years ago, no two or three months before the fight.

A Muay Thai clinch is a difficult technique to get out of when it's applied well. getting into a lock of your own means getting good position, like getting your opponent against the fence and getting a leg of balance and bringing him down.
As ninedemonsgod said, Silva is an excellent Thai fighter, but I'm thinking more on that something was wrong well before the fight started, like Franklin wasn't even focused on the fight, and I think his mind was just elsewhere and he didn't have the hunger for the fight like he had before he was laid up.
And again he played right into Silvas game which is the standing side of the fight and going toe to toe with someone who has the better techniques in either side and you have a weakness in a particular side, you have to work with what favors you, Franklin's fairly well rounded, but he worked too much in where he's still not proficient in yet.
Hopefully next time they knuckle up, Franklin will be more prepared to go against Silva

There are several ways to escape from a Muay Thai clinch, one way is turn your hips and transfer there weeight into a hip toss. But overall, Silva was just a better striker and his speed and accuracy was what really beat Franklin.

No doubt he played into Silva's game as one has said. However as to the question of beating a double collar tie like that, theres a few things I know of. First is to sneak an arm between his eblows and get a collar tie of your own. You can use foot work and elbows/overhands to make some room for this. Another thing you can do (no too smart though) is catch his knee and try to work a single. The last thing I know of, but it's easy to defend against, is double underhooks. However all the opponent with the tie has to do is keep his hips away, which he's prolly doing to throw knees.
PS You can also trap and arm and attempt a flying armbar to counter the collar tie.

Franklin tried to go toe to toe with Silva. By the time Franklin tried to escape, Silva already broke Franklin's rib. Yes, Franklin should have got into Silva's neck and attempt blocks or strikes of his own. By that time it was already over, Franklin then had a broken rib and then got his nose smashed.

Defense against the clinch (plumb) is elementary Muay Thai.
He needed to get his hands on the inside...he should have been working Anderson's neck.
He could have put his fists on the waiste of Anderson.
He should NOT have dropped his head.
