Air samples gathered last week contain radioactive materials that confirm that North Korea conducted an underground nuclear explosion, National Intelligence Director John Negroponte's office said Monday.

In a short statement posted on its Web site, Negroponte's office also confirmed that the size of the explosion was less than 1 kiloton, a comparatively small nuclear detonation. Each kiloton is equal to the force produced by 1,000 tons of TNT.

"Analysis of air samples collected on October 11, 2006, detected radioactive debris which confirms that North Korea conducted an underground nuclear explosion in the vicinity of P'unggye on October 9, 2006," the statement said

More afraid than what, 3,000 state of the art soviet ICBM's pointed at America during the cold war?

Or more afraid than the south koreans who live and die 30 miles from 10,000 batteries of artillery pointed at their city, and have done so for the past 50 years?

1. they blew up a bomb of some kind, no real evidence yet it was a nuke. It was a very small explosion, and didn't have the typical seismic signature of a nuke. It could have been a nuke that failed, or a conventional explosion with a little radioactive material thrown in so it could be detected by the US spy planes.

2. when you are an insane megalomaniac dictator, and the leader of the most militarized country in history labels you one of the "axis of evil" and then proceeds to invade one of the other 2 members....I suspect that does make you want to rattle the sabers a little as a warning.

3. I am still more afraid of the Bush administration

Nuclear checks are used to substantiate that the layout the "magnificent" engineers and scientists are pushing ahead truly works. at the same time as a attempt to substantiate that an atomic bomb can truly be outfitted is now no longer required, a up and coming nuclear means wana-be like North Korea can't be truly particular that what their boffins dreamed up is called an outstanding layout. and they have solid motives to be skeptical, because the first 2 checks that were performed by technique of the NKs were embarrassing fizzles, the top outcome being extra of a damp firecracker than a huge bang (a minimum of in nuclear words). Then, once the lab rats have shown that they honestly can make something flow boom, they nevertheless ought to refine their layout into something that would want to: a million. in advantageous condition below the nostril cone of a missile 2. carry mutually at the same time as being shaken truly violently on launch and reentry 3. no longer flow boom if the missile wearing it makes a decision to blow up on the pad, or throughout another of the myriad of malfunctions missiles are so weak to. 4. reliably blow up at the same time as the time has come. Pop a cap too early or too previous due and all you've carried out is to truly tick off your erstwhile opponent. at the same time as suggested opponent is a superpower (or has a authentic solid pal who's one) and has one hundred nuclear tipped missiles to each and all and sundry of yours, ticking them off is an extremely, truly undesirable idea. So particularly than taking a probability that they ignored "one little element", a united states state drills a shaft into the area of their maximum expendable mountain, run the gadget to the top of the tunnel, stick in as a lot try instrumentation as they could be able to dredge up, hook all of it up, and reduce back out slowly, filling in the tunnel as they flow. Then Max pushes the button and that all of them see in the journey that they were given it accurate. If all is going boom, then the champagne flows and the money pours out to "construct the bomb". If it is going "pop" rather of "bang", a busload of once eminent boffins change into new contributors of "Reeducation Camp #27 (Strict Regime)" and the crown of chief Scientist for Nuclear projects settles on the damp foreheadof a newly promoted, bespectacled nerd, who's actually hoping the lengthy darkish tunnel he's searching down is a sparkling tunnel for his valuable try, and not in any respect the barrel of a gun if it is going "pop" back. So for some, there's a aspect of probability. For something persons, we do not opt to get too apprehensive, yet.

yes it worries me. because Mr Bush has declared the 3 exis of evil based on his openion. first he said Iraq , then he occupied Iraq. 2nd Iran, then he is trying to give Iran a hard time. 3rd is north Korea, so North Korea think they are next and it's a matter of life or death for them. the leader of North korea is crazy, he may say "let me attack the USA now while its busy with war in Iraq and Afganistan"
