Because the Christian wedding service does not recognise any end to marriage save by death. The vows are "till death do us part" and in the Anglican service the priest declares: "Those whom God hath joined together let no man put asunder."

What is not always realised is that while the ministers of the established church are authorised to conduct legal marriage services, other places of worship will normally require the attendance of a registrar to certify the marriage. This gives some indication of the dichotomy between church and state. In some countries (notably France) a religious ceremony has no standing in law and the happy couple will go through a service at the town hall initially and when they appear at the church they will already in fact be man and wife.

So, from the point of view of the church, divorce is not an option. The State, on the other hand, while acknowledging that divorce is not something to encourage within a stable society, does offer that possibility. That is why any break up of a marriage is by operation of law and without the intervention of the church, although I did read something the other day about churches in the USA offering religious services to mark the break up of a marriage. How they can justify this with reference to the Word of God is far from clear.

Your marriage in the eyes of the lord is NOT ended when you get a divorce, you are still well and truly married in the churches eyes. this is why divorces are frowned upon. Your marriage can only be ended if you get an annulment from the church which takes a long time because you have to have legit reasons. for example, marriage has not been consumated or abusive spouse.

It is the combination of the Church and State that makes you married, it is a legal contract as well as by the word of God.

So thats why it takes the law to finally end it.

We aren't really married by the word of God in the government's legal sense. You can get married with or without a religious ceremony. And some religions don't recognize divorce since they don't believe you can undo God's union.

Because the church doesn't have the power it used to, thank goodness. Luckily you don't have to marry by the word of god anymore.

Marriage is a religious institution, the government has hijacked it as a cash cow, and the government is why it takes a law to end it.

I agree. Personally I feel that the government has no right to be in the marriage or divorce business.

You get a marriage "license", remember. Marriage is a legal contract. That is why any consenting adult should be allowed to get married.
