I understand the issue, but I am pretty sure the total number of people on the Earth will be the same no matter which country they're moving to or from.

Yes! An excellent point.
Truth be known (but few like or want to hear it) The earth has a population problem. There are TOO many people.
The movement of large groups of poverty prone masses will always migrate to the more weathy locations of opportunity and better life. It is a fact of nature true to all living organisms. It is the fight to survive.
That is why, those nations that have wealth and well being, should do all they can to mitigate the potential disrutption of order and oportunity for their own people, by helping their neighbors with aid and to some degree, guidance in leadership so that things get better and masses don't need to wildly go across borders and create mayhem in their search for a better existance.
If there was some realistic attempt to limit poplulation growth (like capping the Cathlic church urgeings of mass reproduction!) the world would be a better place, with more oil, food, shelter and opprtunities for those that are here now.
We are control freaks as HUMANS and it is high time we start to wake up and control OURSELVES and our out of control birth rates.
If not, we will literally F--K ourselves into oblivion in the end.

Yes it is a global issue. You have boats landing in Spain and people pouring into parts of Europe....China just added a fence to keep the illegal Koreans and smuggling out. Australia is having her problems. Some is as a result of starvation, mass killings, relegious freedom....but these countries are finding, just like we are, that
they can't handle everyone either. Everyone is facing social, economical, cultural & environmental strain when the demand exceeds the ability to sustain them all. Sometimes it's like trying to save a fighting drowning person....there's times you have to let go before they drown you too.

The big question is, why is America the big magnet where so many are willing to go through all kinds of hardship to enter? Other countries are much older and have had much more time to develop. They should be richer. They shoud have the jobs. They should have the opportunities. They failed.
What should we expect of those who settle here ? Will we eventually bring them up to our standards, or will we be reduced to theirs ?

Whatever the worlds population everyone lives in a country. The answer is to stay there. You have no right to assume that any other country has a responsibility for you, because they haven't.
