You have to use a writeable cd, of course, but cd-rw discs [discs that can be erased and reused] do the job slower than plain cd-r.
Pictures, text, even .mpg, .rm, .avi and other video files, are fine on cd-r. You can even make VCD -video cd's - and SVCD discs with them. Basically, don't waste money on dvd discs or cd--rw's for ordinary files...
