If you want to learn about photography on the cheap, and with a manual , you could get hold of a film camera - people are virtually giving them away as they switch to digital. I gave away a Minolta X-300 35mm SLR on a group called Freecycle. You can find your local Freecycle group here:

www.freecycle.org

Freecycle has over 2.5million members world-wide. It exists to link people who have stuff they no longer want or need with those who can make use of it. The main rule is that anything offered must be offered for free. It's perfect for people having garage clear-outs, or de-junking sessions. You quite often see film cameras on Freecycle groups.

Of course, there are developing costs to consider with film cameras, I suppose. On the other hand, basic 35mm manual SLRs can be had free or cheap, as can the lenses which go with them. I ended up with a 28mm wide-angle and a nice 100mm lens for my Minolta for about £25 on eBay.

300-500$ is not enough to see a big difference in quality image, for that price range you'll still in the point & shoot category (small sensor, that goes as well with bridge camera "the big zoom"). Go take a look at the Canon G12 & the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5, those are probably the best camera in that price range, but If you really want a better quality image you'll need to increase your budget and get a DSLR,they have bigger sensor, they work better in low light situation and you can buy better lens.

one of my digi cameras is a Fuji S7000 which now retail in the UK /Ebay for @ £180 or less .absolute bargain.
this can be used in auto or manual mode, as good most top range SLRs with a max 12 million pixels ,inbuilt flash is a little bit poor on range but an external flash is no problem .

this also has a movie facility which depending on size of memory card makes great little movies
hope this is of some help , try looking at fuji website.

Hai Friend u can find a camera ranging from Rs.800 to 2000, u decide and go for it first and take more photographs in different angles, lighting's, with out flash, in rooms, out door, scenarie etc., so that u can get more experience and after that you can decide to go for again a advanced camera and if possible you go for any starters photography book, with this u get some idea of how to take take photos.

Depends on your budget, and what do you consider to be 'expensive'?
