My seven year old son is being phisically and emotionally bullied by a 5th grader. It is happening on the way to school and home, but not at school or on school ground because of the age difference. So do you involve the police?!? I really don't want to deal with this kids family as they are very strange and scary. What kind of action can the police take on a 5th grader?

They are strange because they have lived down the street from me for 6 years and I have only seen the parents coming and going a few times. The house is TRASHED, and the police have been there several times, due to things older brothers have done such as arson, fights etc... In all honesty, being their neighbor makes it worse and scares me.

Call the police--they can do something.

I'm unsure what the police can do, but I could be wrong, you might call their non-emergency number to see if there is something that can be done. Is your son walking home from school? If he's riding the bus, the bus driver and the school can effectively get involved.
I would talk to the principal of the school and discuss what is happening. This boy may be bullying other children at school and they can keep a close eye out for that.
Why do you feel this boys family is strange and scary? Is there someone else who can talk to them on your behalf, a husband, a boyfriend, your son's father?
Good luck with this, I'm sure this is so hard for you and your son. I wish you well.

Unless laws have changed the school is responsible for the child when they are walking to and from school. I would contact the school and tell that what is happening. If this doesn't help get the police involved. I don't think there is much that can be done since the bully is so young. But, I'm sure just a visit to the child's house would be enough to scare him straight. You also might consider trying to find another way for your child to get to and from school. Can you walk him or drive him? Grandparents?

Even though they are strange, your best bet might be to talk to the bully's family. If you involve the police it might make things worse. Unless of course your child has been physically hurt. Then by all means involve the police.
Another option is for you or someone else walk with your child to and from school.

first of all...don't be afraid..sounds sort of silly i knoow but its the first step you as a parent have to take...secondly lets talk about just what might trigger the attacks; is it that your son seemingly is better off...meaning well kempt clean seldom hungry, etc... maybe some of the things that are lacking in the bullies home life...third, no one has the right to bully and far more no one has to tolerate such action....so, how do you get involved without getting involved...several ways ...if the home life is tragic, the call cps...the kindess thing that another can do is extend kindness by getting help for this person... the family will not know just who has called especially if the house is in such bad shape...ok for your son...lets get him in some self defense classes; if only for self esteem and letting go of fear...boost his confidense...now as for the bullying...well why don't you just happen to be in the neighborhood; better yet you a few friends at diffrent spots just happen to be there in case the bully wants to pick at your son...nothing messes another up as badly as when a parent or an oplder adult just shows up to walk home...will this embarrass your son...i hope not in fact he just might feel relived to see a happy face...ask the school about a program to help others in school to stop the bulling of others...this is something we as parents must do hpw sad at such a young age this child is learning to instill fear to feel like a person...hope this helps

I also agree. Get the police involved. If it is not happening at school but on the way to and from school, and this bully's family is kinda of scary...don't take matters into your own hands. Talk to the police.

Yes, call the police and complain because more then likely the school won't do anything.....the 5th grader can go through the juvinelle system but it's possible that the cops will settle it between the two families so that if they boy doesn't harass your child...you won't press charges...

you should give his parents a heads up...they maybe surprised and appalled that their child is being mean to anyone especially a smaller child. Protect your child.....put him in a cab....send the family a bill each week.
