I have been a kidney stone former for a long time. As far as I know, they cannot go undetected on scans. As for symptoms, until the stone gets caught in one of the ducts there are no noticeable symptoms. Once they get caught the major symptom is pain. You may also notice blood in the urine. Also, there is a chance of fever if an accompanying infection occurs, but that only happened once to me.

For me the pain starts in the upper part of the lower back. It felt like someone was grinding their bony fist into that spot. Then the pain starts to radiate to the front and towards your bladder. Pain while urinating, sometimes low urine output, sometimes blood in the urine. Fever and vomiting sometimes come with it. I threw my guts up with one of my stones but not the others. Some of the stones made me want to double over and hold my stomach. If you think that you are getting one or have one, lemon juice can help break it up into more manageable pieces that may move thru your system more easily. I would take a shot of straight lemon juice whenever I would feel one coming on...haven't had one again since I started doing this. Hope this helps.

Pain while urinating, feeling constipated, like you really have to go but it won't come out. Lots of pressure. Sometimes bleeding . Sharp, stabbing pain in your back, legs, groin, kidney area. If you get to where you cannot urinate, you must immediately get to the hospital. You could die.

pain that may or may not start in your side then moves to the groin area. some doctors can misdiagnose it as a STD. ct scans can always usually detect them. my sister just had ct done and found out she has them but the doctors thought she had the clamydia
