well you have too get a lawyer for you and the child to protect the childs rights as a minor once this is done family service will come out and talk with you to fine out why you want to adopt this child and see where this child will be living then your lawyer will run a ad for the real parents just to give them a fair chance too see this child, and keep if they dont then your lawyer will get a hearing before the judge too decide if this child can and will be adopted good luck adopting is so rewarding i have no regrets i adopted a son

The adoption process is really expensive on your own but if you get anattorney you are more than tripling that expense. If you do not have another parent disputeing the adoption, pick up a book on it. I live in California, but there at severalbooks at my library called "adopting your stepchild in Calif.", they give step b step instructions, forms etc. so maybe you can find a similar book for Illinois. The following link answers a few common questions on the subject. Good luck

Get an attorney. They will do the basic things in the search for the father that they have to do by law. If after a certain amount of time nothing comes up. You can think apply for adoption and a judge will grant it. I'm thinking it should work that way in your state.
