Gluttony is the over-indulgence and over-consumption of food, drink, or intoxicants to the point of waste. In the Christian religions, it is considered one of the seven deadly sins -- a misplaced desire of food or its withholding from the needy.
Depending on the culture, it can be seen as either a vice or a sign of status. The relative affluence of the society can affect this view both ways. A wealthy group might take pride in the security of having enough food to eat to show it off, but it could also result in a moral backlash when confronted with the reality of those less fortunate.
Early Church leaders (e.g., Thomas Aquinas) took a more expansive view of gluttony (Okholm 2000), arguing that it could also include an obsessive anticipation of meals, and the constant eating of delicacies and excessively costly foods.

First of all, a sin has to have the will engaged. For many people food is an addiction which mitigates their responsibility as their will power is diminished. Secondly, in today's world where everyday living is out of control, many people use food for their comfort when they are surrounded by threats either real or imagined. It doesn't necessarily negate the wrongness of it but one could understand it from that point of view. Look at the poor people who have very little money. They can only afford cheaper more fattening foods (macaroni, beans, rice) and they take their comfort out on these foods because they cannot afford to take the nice vacations others do. Where it gets to be a problem with the soul is where they do not turn to God for their comfort. Several cultures and or body styles lean more towards what is called gluttony too. One more thought---consider a skeletal person who hardly eats at all but, exercises non stop for fear of gaining weight. This person could also be a glutton. Any thing that takes the place of God in ones life over and above ones health is a gluttonous type of thing.

I think there might be several ways of defining gluttony. However from the spiritual point of view, I would say it's a problem when you begin living to eat, instead of eating to live! In the Epistle to the Philippians the apostle Paul speaks of those who make their stomachs their gods.
Pigging out once or twice doesn't necessarily make you a glutton. But when you are always concerned about what you are going to eat (I'm not taking about starved people who are worried where their next meal will come from) about how much you'll get to eat, you go out to dinner and your chief preoccupation is that you will be able to have lots to eat, then you have a real problem with gluttony.
Some people manage to become obese without necessarily being a glutton. At one point in my life I could have been fairly accused of being gluttonous, and yet I was quite skinny.
So it's attitude to food, a form of selfishness as well.

Gluttony means over-indulging to the point where it's simply wasteful... in general not a good thing... certainly repulsive when people do it as a status thing... to show that they can. but fun on holidays such as thanksgiving where it's a good fun excuse to be gluttonous and enjoy a lovely feast in a grateful to be alive kind of way.

Gluttony is overeating like what Americans do at Thanksgiving or any meal where they feel stuffed to the gourd

In my opinion it is both. I see it as being when you will sit and eat whether healthy food or fatty foods until you are sick and still wanting more. Overindulgence.

Gluttony is where you make food your central focus. You can be a glutton with entertainment and other distractions. It does not have to be food.

Gluttony can best be described as having to replace all of your mirrors with larger ones.

Gluttony would be wanting or taking more than you need. Not just food either.
