There are several excellent video converters, some free and others commercial. By far the best commercial product is Elaborate Bytes' Clone DVD. It can compress video files to fit on to a single layered DVD blank while still retaining much of its video quality - when you compress a movie, the image quality decreases. The download link is:
It comes with a 21 days free trial. Afterwards, you need to purchase a license to continue to use it. It is somewhat expensive $42.00 USD.
As for a free software, I recommend trying DVD Decrypter. It can both decrypt copy protected DVD movies and burn them to a DVD blank. However, it can not compress video files. However, you can use it in conjunction with DVDShrink to compress a DVD movie and burn the converted files on to a single layered DVD blank. Go to http://www.filehippo.com/software/dvd/
The site hosts several other video editing software, some free and others commercial.

ConvertXtoDVD - It combines, converts, and burns your movies to a DVD-R so you can watch them on your DVD player.
The only thing you'll have to do once you get the program is change a few of the settings (there's 8 different tabs in preferences so make sure you look at them all).
Under TV you will want to set it to your TV color system. If you're in the U.S. it's NTSC. If you're not in the U.S. look on the back of your dvds to see if there's an "NTSC" or a "PAL" icon in small print. That's your TV system.
There's also an aspect ratio setting for Full Screen, Widescreen, or Automatic. If you have a fullscreen tv pick that, if you have a widescreen tv pick that, and if you want to try automatic, which I haven't, feel free.
Finally set the conversion quality to High. You don't have to, but converted video doesn't always look perfect to begin with, so it's recommended. There's also a conversion priority setting right below. Most of the time just use normal, but if you want it done fast choose high but don't use your pc while it's running, let it be completely, and use low if you're going to be using your computer heavily during converting.
Those will pretty much make sure your dvd will play and look right. Look at the burn settings and change anything you need to there. 4x is recommended for burning so it doesn't come out choppy.
If you set it up correctly, you can open up the program, drag and drop video files to the window, then click convert. Stick a blank dvd in, and few hours later the whole thing will be complete. Just pop the dvd in your dvd player.
p.s. Nero will take 2-3 times longer than ConvertXtoDVD, and while this looks like a lot of info, converting to dvd is anything but simple, so keep that in mind.

In my opinion the best software to burn CDs/DVDs is Ashampoo Burning. It's a free software and it can be downloaded here: http://bitly.com/1lAV5xM
If you want to make a DVD that will work on a common DVD player, you definitely need a burning software. Copying the movie as is directly to a new DVD it's not the right way to do it (If you do so your DVD player will not be able to play the video/movie properly).
The most reliable DVD burning program I used it Ashampoo Burning. It works with all types of videos and music (both with DVDs and CDs). Ashampoo is a very modern and professional software (you can also edit videos and create DVD menus)
