My mum is in alot of pain because she has two discs missing at the bottom of her back she has been told by her doctor the NHS won't pay for these injections as she doesnt live in the right area. Can anybody suggest anything to help as I dont like to see my mum suffer and she still struggles to work everyday. Thanks

I hate this postcode lottery crap! Ask your mum's GP to prescribe her something stronger that can help her cope with the pain. Most hospitals also have a Pain Management Unit - ask for a referral there too. If all else fails, get your mum to write to her MP and the local media too. Find out exactly what these injections are, and look them up on the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) website and see what their recommendations are.

My mum has suffered from constant pain for several years now, she used to take a lot of medication (28 pillsfor pain and other conditions)each day but it nearly destroyed her stomach lining, so much so that they have put her on a thing called a Pain Patch, and it is working really well. It looks like a nicotine patch, but contains painkiller (in my mums case a low dose of morphine), It works by slowly releasing the medication through the skin into her system.

Are there any walk-in clinics in your area? Sometimes they do payment plans or charge on a sliding fee scale, which is according to your income. There's gotta be something out there that can help her. You can try alternative medicines too, like massage or acupuncture maybe. Your mom is a very brave and strong woman to still keep working and everything! I hope all works out for the two of you!

I'm a little confused here... if she's missing two discs, I can't see where any injections are going to assist her. Sounds more like she's a surgical candidate. I would consider getting a second opinion from an orthopedic physician or spine specialist.

You can write to the National Institute of Clinical Excellence - address would be on the website or you can ask to your GP to fight your corner for you. I am surprised that the GP has accepted this. If all is lost then take the matter up with your MP who will guide you in the right direction.

How about accupuncture? A series of treatments may help. Or keeping pain reliever levels even...take them every four hours or whatever the suggested interval is and not waiting to be in pain.

I feel bad for your mom. Pain sucks so bad. I hope she gets the help she deserves. Good luck to you and your mom.

Ask her GP for GP referral to a gym, where Mum can get her core fitness /strength up together to support her back. You may get referral from GP to physio to have acupuncture. Make sure she doesn't carry excessive weight and walks every day. Pilates and stretching is excellent.

Check with your local social work organization for funding too. How about acupuncture?

Go to the Doctor and claim to have really bad toothache. If he/she prods about, yelp at the appropriate times.

Ask for a strong pain killer. Something like dihydrocodeine tartarate. These are prescribed fairly commonly and they're damn good painkillers.
